Description

Latin Name: Pimenta Dioica

Origin Country: Mexico

Despite its name, allspice isn’t a universal blend of multiple spices. It is actually the dried unripe berry of the Pimenta dioica tree, which is indigenous to an area of the Caribbean.

The allspice is enriched with the good amount of minerals like potassium, manganese, iron, copper, selenium, and magnesium.

The active principles in the allspice found to have been anti-inflammatory, rubefacient (warming and soothing), carminative and anti-flatulent properties.

–  Allspice contains health benefiting essential oils such as eugenol, that gives it a strong, distinctive taste. It has local anesthetic and antiseptic properties, hence useful in gum and dental treatment procedures.

–  As in black peppercorns, the active principles in the allspice may increase the motility of the gastro-intestinal tract as well as augment the digestion power. It also treats various problems such as diarrhea and constipation.

–  Being an important component of cell and body fluids, potassium helps control heart rate and blood pressure.

–  It is a powerful antioxidant, especially in combination with the vitamins A and C it contains. Destroys harmful free radicals, preventing premature aging.

You can use the allspice powder as a spice. Because it has such a unique and multi-dimensional flavor profile, it pairs well with both sweet and savory dishes. You can drop a few allspice powder into your mulled wine or tea while brewing to add a deep, warm flavor to it. A pinch of ground spice sprinkled into curries, soups or stews gives them a more rounded flavor. To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of allspice powder in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10 'to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day. You can substitute up to 1/2 teaspoon of allspice powder in recipes that call for the whole allspice berry (equalling about 6 allspice berries), or an equivalent mixture of the cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Allspice seems to be safe for most people when used properly. Hypersensitive individuals could experience an allergic reaction to allspice. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using allspice especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
