Origin Country: Ivory Coast

Also known as achiote, annatto seeds grow inside the spiny fruits of the achiote tree. When ground into annatto powder, Annatto’s primary use through history has been as a coloring agent for makeup, textiles, or to color foods.

However, many people are beginning to utilize annatto seed as a spice in and of itself. The flavor is bittersweet with notes of mace and mint. Annatto contains numerous plant-based compounds with antioxidant properties, including carotenoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and tocotrienols.

–  Annatto is a good source of vitamin E, which may protect against age-related heart issues, also several test-tube studies indicate that annatto compounds may reduce numerous markers of inflammation.

–  Annatto is suitable for diabetes, diarrhea, fevers, fluid retention, heartburn, malaria and hepatitis. It is also used as an antioxidant and bowel cleanser.

–  Annatto is sometimes put directly on the affected area to treat burns and vaginal infections and to repel insects.

–  Annatto is high in carotenoids, which can benefit eye health.

Annatto is an orange-red condiment and food coloring. It is often used to impart a yellow or orange color to foods, but sometimes also for its flavor and aroma. Annatto seeds pair well with spices like cumin, garlic and chili peppers. Annatto can be combinded well with chicken, rice, soups and it can take off the taste.
Annatto seeds seems to be safe for most people when used properly. In some situations, annatto may trigger symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not consume it in amounts higher than those normally found in foods, as there aren’t enough studies on its safety in these populations. Though it’s uncommon, some people may experience an allergic reaction to it, especially if they have known allergies to plants in the Bixaceae family. Some side effects include itchiness, swelling, low blood pressure, hives, and stomach pain. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using it especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
