Description

Latin Name : Centaurium Erythraea

Centaury is a small, erect herb that is native to North Africa, Europe and Western Asia. This is an herb that may be used for nearly any problem. The plant contains a bitter substance called quinine or centaurine. It also contains anthocyanin which has astringent, bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and diuretic properties.

Digestive Aid: Centaury strengthens digestive function, especially within the stomach. It helps with digestive problems such as dyspepsia, constipation, flatulence and heartburn. The bitter action stimulates the entire digestive reflex allowing for optimal absorption and uptake of nutrients. By increasing stomach secretions it hastens the breakdown of food, it also stimulates the appetite and increases bile production.

Anaemia: Centaury has been used in formulas for this action to increase iron uptake in those with anaemia.

Antioxidant: The herb is beneficial for the functioning of the liver and the kidneys, helps in getting the blood rid of all impurities and is an exceptional stimulant.

Antipyretic action: Centaury causes sweating, which means it helps produce sweat. This is especially useful for lowering body temperature, causing the fever to drop and toxins to be removed from the body through the skin.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10' to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day.
Although centaury is generally considered safe to use medicinally, over-consumption of the recommended dosage may cause vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
