Description

Latin Name : Cinchona Officinalis

Quinine is a natural substance removed from the bark of the medicinal plant “Cinchona officinalis L.”, also known as quina, quineira, red cinchona, peruvian bark or Jesuit bark.

Quinine is an essential component in natural medicines, and can be used as a digestive stimulant and a tonic for the remedy of illnesses like indigestion.

It is also used for treating amoebic infections, dysentery, dyspepsia, diarrhea, lumbago, malaria, pneumonia, sciatica, varicose veins, hangovers and even typhoid.

In the European natural medicine systems, cinchona bark can be used as a bitter tonic, antiprotozoal, antispasmodic, and as a fever reducer. It’s also useful for managing irregular heartbeats, anaemia, muscle cramps, leg cramps, and as an anaesthetic in some situations.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10 'to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour. The maximum amount of cinchona that can be used is one to three grams of the bark per day.
Cinchona bark is generally considered safe to use medicinally but high consumption has been linked to serious side effects such as ringing of the ears, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and vision disturbances. Cinchona can also cause bleeding and allergic reactions, including hives and fever. This plant should not be consumed by pregnant women, infants or people with hypersensitivity to its chemical compound. In any case you should consult with your doctor before using any herb especially if you have health problems.
