Description

Latin Name : Origanum Dictamnus

Origin Country: Greece

As the name of this herb suggests, it grows wild only in Crete, and there it grows in gorges and mountainsides. It has a reputation as being an aphrodisiac and throughout the centuries young men have risked life and limb to collect this herb.

Dittany has antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial properties due to the phenol carvacrol. It can be used as an antirheumatic, oxytocic, stomachic and vulnerary.

Dittany is used for digestive tract disorders including cramps, stomach problems and worms in the intestines. It is also used for urinary tract and genital tract disorders.

According to a research dittany acts against pathogenic bacteria of the oral cavity, but also against potential pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans.

It also acts as an antidiabetic and as aphrodisiac.

Dittany is also used externally as a poultice on wounds and bruises.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10 'to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour.
Dittany is generally considered safe to use medicinally but high consumption has been linked to serious side effects such as phototoxicity. In any case you should consult with your doctor before using any herb especially if you have health problems.
