Description

Latin name : Zingiber Officinale

Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of traditional/alternative medicine. It has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the flu and common cold.

Ginger contains a diverse array of many important vitamins and minerals: dietary fiber, protein, sodium, iron, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, folate, riboflavin, niacin.

The unique fragrance and flavor of ginger come from its natural oils, the most important of which is gingerol.

Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger, responsible for much of its medicinal properties. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Chewing raw ginger or drinking ginger tea is a common home remedy for nausea during pregnancy.

Ginger has been shown to be effective against exercise-induced muscle pain.

Ginger has also been found to reduce the symptoms of dysmenorrhea, the severe pain that some women experience during a menstrual cycle.

Ginger’s health benefits include reducing cholesterol, lowering the risk of blood clotting, and helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

To make ginger tea at home, slice 20 to 40 grams (g) of fresh ginger and steep it in a cup of hot water. Adding a slice of lemon or a drop of honey adds flavor and additional benefits, including vitamin C and antibacterial properties.
Natural ginger will cause little or no known side effects for most people. In some, however, a high intake may worsen symptoms of acid reflux, irritate the mouth, and cause diarrhea.
