Latin Name : Silybum Marianum

Milk thistle is an herbal remedy derived from the milk thistle plant, also known as Silybum marianum. The active ingredients in milk thistle are a group of plant compounds collectively known as silymarin. The silymarin is known to have antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Here are some science-based benefits of milk thistle:

–  Liver Detoxification & Health : As a liver support and liver aid, milk thistle is a powerful detoxifier. It helps rebuild liver cells while removing toxins from the body that are processed through the liver. Milk thistle is effective at naturally reversing the harmful effects of alcohol consumption, pesticides in our food supply, heavy metals in our water supply, pollution in the air that we breathe in and even poisons!

– Helps Protect Against Cancer: Milk thistle seeds are a high source of the antioxidant flavonoid called silymarin. Silymarin is associated with decreasing the risk for cancer development by boosting the immune system, fighting DNA damage and reversing cancerous tumour growth.

– Helps Prevent Gallstones : Milk thistle benefits help support the endocrine and gastrointestinal systems by aiding in the production of bile and enzymes, on top of helping clean the blood. Milk thistle can help purify the body of metabolic waste, thereby regulating the function of the gallbladder, in addition to the kidneys and spleen.

–  It Can Boost Breast Milk Production: One reported effect of milk thistle is that it can boost breast milk production in lactating mothers. It’s thought to work by making more of the milk-producing hormone prolactin.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10 'to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour. The root and the fresh new leaves and flowers are eaten raw or cooked but their sharp edges must first be removed. Its peeled stalks are eaten raw or cooked, are delicious and nutritious and can be used like asparagus or rhubarb or added to salads.
Although it is generally considered a safe herb that does not cause side effects, however, cases of mild stomachache or allergic reactions after consumption have been reported. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
