Latin Name : Haematoxylum Campechianum

Origin Country: Mexico

Haematoxylum campechianum (blackwood, bloodwood tree, campeche logwood, logwood or logwood tree) is a species of flowering tree in the legume family, Fabaceae, that is native to southern Mexico. The tree’s scientific name means “bloodwood” (haima being Greek for blood and xylon for wood). The heartwood of Haematoxylum campechianum has historically been valued as a source of dye, particularly for producing a deep blue colour. It has an agreeable odour resembling violets.

Pour enough boiling water over the logwood to make a dye bath and soak overnight. Pour off this liquid and use for the first (and strongest) dye bath. Simmer fibres for about one hour, keeping the temperature between 77-83ºC (170-180ºF). If a darker colour is required leave fibres in dye bath overnight.
- While logwood powder is not typically consumed, accidental ingestion could potentially cause gastrointestinal upset. - Direct contact with logwood powder may cause skin irritation in some individuals. - Inhaling logwood powder dust may irritate the respiratory system, especially for individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions. - Contact with logwood powder can irritate the eyes, causing redness, watering, or discomfort. - Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult with a healthcare professional before using logwood powder.
