Description

Latin Name : Leonurus Cardiaca

Origin Country: European Union

Also called lion’s tail, motherwort is an upright, prickly bush with dark green leaves and furry purple or pink flowers  It’s native to Asia and Southeastern Europe but can now be found worldwide. Unlike some other herbs in the mint family, it has an unpleasant smell and bitter flavor.

Motherwort contains numerous plant-based compounds with antioxidant properties, including flavonoids, sterols, triterpenes, and tannins

–  Motherwort is used for heart conditions, including heart failure, irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, and heart symptoms due to anxiety.

–  It is used for intestinal gas (flatulence), and over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

–  Some people apply motherwort directly to the skin for itching and shingles.

–  Motherwort may be able to stimulate uterine blood flow, so it can also be used for the absence of menstrual periods.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10' to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day. Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour.
Motherwort is POSSIBLY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth appropriately. Side effects include diarrhea, stomach irritation, uterine bleeding, sleepiness, and allergic reactions. Contact with the skin can cause rashes and increased sensitivity to the sun. If you have a uterine bleeding condition, use motherwort with caution, since it might make this condition worse. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
