Dittany has antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial properties due to the phenol carvacrol. It can be used as an antirheumatic, oxytocic, stomachic and vulnerary.

It is used for digestive tract disorders including cramps, stomach problems and worms in the intestines. It is also used for urinary tract and genital tract disorders.

According to a research dittany acts against pathogenic bacteria of the oral cavity, but also against potential pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans. It also acts as an antidiabetic and as aphrodisiac.

Dittany is also used externally as a poultice on wounds and bruises.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10 'to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour.
Dittany is generally considered safe to use but high consumption has been linked to serious side effects such as phototoxicity and allergic reaction. There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking dittany if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use. In any case you should consult with your doctor before using any herb especially if you have health problems.
