Description

Latin Name: Pfaffia Panaculata

Origin Country: Brazil

Pfaffia paniculata or also known as Suma or Brazilian ginseng is a tropical, large and shrubby vine that has a deep and extensive root system. Although suma root is often called “Brazilian ginseng” , is not actually part of the ginseng plant family, it just has similar, energizing qualities. Commonly found in South America, it belongs to the family Amaranthaceae.

Suma is very nutritionally rich. It contains antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins A, B, E, and K, minerals, and electrolytes. The electrolytes and B vitamins provide its energizing effect.

Suma also contains germanium, which boosts the immune system. Perhaps most interesting is that suma root contains two anabolic agents, allantoin and ecdysterone, that have been linked to muscle growth support and enhanced endurance.

In Portuguese, Suma Root is called “para tudo” which means “for everything”. The name is likely in reference to use it being used to improve various ailments including fatigue, anxiety, erectile malaise, and stress.

Much of suma root’s traditional use has been as an aphrodisiac and evidence suggests it helps to support balanced hormone levels.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried root powder in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10' to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day. You can also sprinkle suma root powder on food or in beverages.
Most studies have reported no apparent negative side effects of suma or its component compounds. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications
