Blackberry root come from the blackberry plant, a perennial shrub native to every continent except Australia and Antarctica. It is a good source of tannins, iron and vitamin C and other antioxidants.

Here are some of the most important health benefits of Blackberry:

–  Astringent: Blackberry leaves and root are astringent and are used for the treatment of gastric distress, including diarrhoea and stomach bloating and discomfort. The astringent qualities of blackberry  may also prove useful in soothing sore throat and treating haemorrhoids.

– Wound care: Another benefit of astringent tannins in blackberry roots is their healing effecting on the wounds. External application of tincture or infusion made from blackberry helps in the constriction of blood vessels and cure small injuries.

–  Antioxidants : Blackberry leaves and root have been traditionally used in herbal medicine as an antimicrobial agent and for their healthful antioxidant properties.

– Oral Hygiene : A preparation made from blackberry root, leaves and ripe berries can be used as a gargle to treat sore throats, inflamed gums and mouth ulcers.

Decoction: In a pot, bring 3 cups of cold water, 3-4 teaspoons of blackberry root to a simmer. Gently decoct (simmer) for 30 minutes. Strain out herbs and return liquid to pot. . Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day. Add if you want one spoonful of honey at a time and dissolve over very low heat until you reach desired sweetness.
Blackberry root is generally considered safe to use medicinally. Due to the high content of tannins found in the herb it can cause nausea and vomiting in some people.
