Description

Latin Name : Verbascum Thapsus

The mullein plant has been around for thousands of years. The leaves are almost odorless and with a bitter taste. The main ingredient they contain is gum and resin, a little tannin and a trace of volatile oil.

Mullein is a popular natural remedy most often used to treat respiratory disorders since ancient times, but it also has many other medicinal uses.

  • Cold and Flu: Mullein has expectorant and anti-bacterial properties, which make drinking mullein tea helpful if you have a cold or flu with lots of congestion. It is the saponins in mullein that give it its expectorant properties.
  • Allergies, Asthma, & Bronchitis : Mullein is a great treatment for allergies, asthma, and bronchitis for the same reasons that it helps with colds and flu – it is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, a natural expectorant and reduces phlegm.
  • Ear Infection: Mullein flower oil works as a natural remedy against ear infections. It is believed that this may be due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
  • Digestive Health: Drinking mullein has been found to help a number of digestive problems including diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, and bladder infections.
  • Cramps: Mullein has anti-spasmodic properties that help with menstrual cramps or stomach cramps associated with gastric distress.
  • Sedative Effects: Mullein has natural sedative benefits and may be helpful in the treatment of insomnia and anxiety.
To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10 'to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour. The infusion of the flowers requires careful straining so that the small hairs that can irritate the throat and cause coughing do not pass.
Mullein is generally considered safe to use on a regular basis but possible side effects include unusual fatigue, lethargy, inflammation of the lungs, skin irritation, confusion connected with the hypnotic effects of mullein. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or have health problems.
